How to choose mountain clothing

How to choose mountains clothing

What type of fabric am I looking for?

we will see how to choose mountain clothing as indicated by our needs. For this, we are going to interview an expert in this matter who is dedicated to searching the world among fabrics to give greater functionality, quality and to obtain financial and sustainable prices for our mountain clothing.

Oswaldo Rivera has been the designer of technical clothing for the OS2O brand for years, in addition to being the creator of the Fast and Lite concept that seeks lightness and commitment to external conditions where the speed of activity is as important as protection against external agents. In this short interview, you will explain from your point of view and offer some guidance on material and fabrics to assist us with choosing mountain clothing for both sporadic and technical activities.

Since when do you do the mountain?

I started in 2004 with the Alpinism bunch at my school.

Bolt symbol Why are you passionate about Fast and Lite?

I cannot express in words what I am passionate about; but on a conceptual level, I consider it to be simple, and therefore of great beauty, you leave a town and climb a mountain and return to the town as fast and lightly as possible.

While choosing mountain clothing you must always consider that waterproof fabrics are also breathable, water does not penetrate, but the steam can come out. The differences are based on the type of layer (material), its operation, and its construction.

The first has to do with the type of layer (interior) used and there are two materials: expanded PolytetraFluoroEthylene (ePTFE) and the second is Polyurethane (PU).

Waterproof fabrics with ePTFE work through a physical process, they have tiny pores that prevent the water particle from entering; but that the steam can come out.

The fabrics with PU work through a compound process, their waterproof capacity is the same as with ePTFE, the small scale pores prevent water from entering; but their trafficability is different, the water fume molecules have a positive charge and the polyurethane texture is negatively charged, attracting water to the polyurethane layer. The third distinction is the construction, 2, 2.5 and 3 layers, the membranes are delicate fabrics and must be protected against dust and dirt (exterior) and sweat and oils (interior), so they are protected with two or three layers of tissue.

A three-layer jacket involves a resistant outer layer (usually Nylon) of the film and an inward layer (which is in contact with the skin) of Nylon and sometimes Polyester.

For high-impact activities the best are the 2.5 layer garments, for increasingly technical activities or where it won't go to an exceptionally high intensity, the 3 layer garments have a greater resistance to wear.

Bolt symbol What cushioned jacket do I purchase?

It always depends on the activity to be completed and the weather conditions that we are going to discover are the factors that will cause us to settle on some material while choosing mountain clothing.

The fiber, being made of synthetic materials, does not react to water, and continues to keep hot air still wet. Therefore, in the event that you will do winter activity where there is a lot of outdoor humidity (snowfall) or at a high intensity, the fiber would be progressively efficient.

The pen would be recommended for winter activities, where there is no high humidity. On the off chance that the pen picks up moisture, its structure is disturbed and cannot expand and attract hot air, making it less efficient in wet conditions.

There are garments with feather filling and hydrophobic treatments (which reject the absorption of water).

Another aspect to consider is the value, feather garments are more expensive and require more consideration than fiber.

Bolt iconWhat is the best texture for a first coat?

Every texture has a function, and it is the use that determines the best decision.

Because of its ability to absorb moisture from the interior and oust it, merino fleece is probably the best material. Also relying upon whether it is blended in with some other texture, for instance Polyester, you can have garments of exceptional functionality. (London airport services)

Nonetheless, because of their manufacturing process and the variable market for fleece, they tend to be over the top expensive.

Other functional materials are Polyester, perfect if the first layer is intended to evacuate moisture. Contingent upon the weight of the garment (thickness) it can also give pretty much heat, making it an extremely versatile material. Polypropylene is also used to deliver technical first layers since it absorbs almost no moisture.

Another aspect to consider is the sensation that it gives when dressing it, it is important that the touch with the skin is as pleasant as a first layer will be used most of the time.

Bolt iconWhat is the future of mountain textiles?

In the mountain textile sector, functionality always precedes form. Right now there are important innovations in different fields, I will mention some of the most relevant.

In the field of sustainability, the use of reused materials is a reality, perhaps in the not too distant future, we will have the first garments, made with other reused garments.

Textile designing, which is sometimes in front of the industry, is creating great innovations, E-fabrics, which integrate texture and technology. Taking advantage of the fact that we are talking about the first layers, which looks like a T-shirt, whose texture adapts to the user's shape (memory), which refreshes during the day and generates heat at night, which does not generate awful stench and this is controlled by solar vitality and the user's own movement, as this is now in progress. Production is also a way, 3D printing is as of now being implemented in other textile areas, I am sure that in a short time it will be installed in mountain textiles.

And at long last the theme of design, the use of creatively accessible materials, we are currently in a stage of multifunctional garments. The garments that in their design permit heat absorption in chilly conditions and reflect it in hot conditions are now a reality. And perhaps the biggest test, designing garments whose functionality is such that it serves to go from the base camp to the top, integrating the entirety of the above with the concept of Fast and Light.
